Hiroshima will forever be synonymous with the first atom bomb that laid waste to the city of old back in 1945. Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park is a constant reminder of that day, and it attracts visitors from all over the world with its moving message of peace.It is hard to reconcile the destruction that was caused here.
Today Hiroshima, known as the "City of Peace" is all hustle and bustle with many Okonomiyaki restaurants specializing in the local pancake. The castle and the Shukkei-en gardens provide an interesting addition to the peace park; the landscaped gardens date back to the 17th Century and are beautiful to wander around. The Museum of Art next door provides a more modern cultural side to this progressive city.
Hiroshima can easily be reached by the high speed Shinkansen from either Kyoto or Osaka, taking only 2 hours or so.
