Punakha – Where To Stay

Punakha has been inextricably linked with momentous occasions in Bhutanese history. It served as the capital of the country from 1637 to 1907 before being moved onto Thimpu, as it remains to this day. However, Punakha still feels like a capital city, and, with stunning views of the snowy Himalayas, it is impressive town to visit.

Amankora Punakha

The Amankora Punakha resort is set just outside the small town of Punakha and only a short drive away from the 17thCentury Punakha Dzong, the major attraction in the area. Converted from an old farm house once owned by the Bhutanese Royal family, the Amankora Punakha makes excellent use of the traditional architecture of the area but still showing contemporary elements among the rustic design. The resort has a spa, perfect after trekking through the rice paddies in the area or visiting the Dzong. The resort has a long list of other activities you can indulge in like mountain biking. This particular Amankora is our favourite lodge in Bhutan at Asia Odyssey.

Uma Punakha

This new intimate luxury lodge is a welcome addition to Punakaha, situated on a bend overlooking the Mo River and every room or suite has commanding views of the valley. Blending perfectly with its surroundings with a modern contemporary design blended with simple neutral colours.
