Bumthang

Bumthang is a beautiful rural valley, often referred to as Little Switzerland due to the pine forests that surround it. Bumthang is an excellent place in which to base yourself and explore the region in more depth, famed for its small cottage industries; mainly producing butter and Emmenthal cheese, honey and the locally brewed Red Panda Beer.  from Paro meaning Bumthang will begin to see a few more visitors. The newly constructed airport has now direct flights.
One of the most historic districts in Bhutan, Bumthang is littered with ancient temples, small monasteries and traditional farm houses. It is also known as the spiritual heart of the country, famed as being the birth place of Buddhism in Bhutan, also this is where the legendary Saint Pema Lingpa was born, to whom the Bhutanese royalty trace their descent.  The trekking in the surrounding pine forest mountains is spectacular and rated as some of the best in the country with walks to suit everyone’s ability.
If you travel further east you will discover the Ura Valley, here you will find a more traditional Bhutan with quaint farming villages with closely huddled houses, small cottage industries, sheep pastures, paddy fields and potato fields. This is wonderfully unexplored area.
