Delhi – Where To Stay

Delhi is a huge commercial and cosmopolitan metropolis that bridges two very different worlds. Old Delhi, once the capital of Islamic India, is a labyrinth of narrow lanes with crumbling havelis, temples, mosques and teeming bazaars. In stark contrast, just a short metro ride away, the imperial city of New Delhi, built by the British Raj to rule the Empire, is composed of spacious, tree-lined avenues and grand, imposing government buildings.  New Delhi has been the capital of India and the seat of government since it gained independence in 1947.

Imperial Hotel

The Imperial is one of the oldest hotels in Delhi from the Raj era and it is still one of our favourites.  Its style is a quirky mélange of Victorian,  colonial and Art Deco, and it has a fantastic collection of artwork of the Maharajas and black and white photos of local historical events.  The location of the Imperial is excellent, in the Lutyens Garden very close to Connaught Square and only a short transfer to the airport, making it a great option for a Delhi stay whether at the beginning or end of your itinerary.

Leela

The Leela Palace is the latest super-deluxe hotel in Delhi and wow this place is really magnificent!  This is luxury on a grand scale (lavish, ornate, splendid) but with a fresh, not stuffy, feel.  The hotel has a wide selection of rooms and suites to choose from, a variety of restaurants, bars and lounges, and a very flash roof-top infinity pool with views onto New Delhi.
