Hakuba is famous for its winter sports scene, especially downhill skiing, since this event was held here at the 1998 Winter Olympics. When the snows comes, it does so in style, and with excellent quality, covering the valley from mid December until late March.
The slopes of Hakuba are fairly empty from Monday to Friday, as the Japanese mainly come for the weekend, so you will more than likely have the runs to yourself. There are also many hot baths - called onsen's - in Hakuba and some are outdoors; these provide a perfect end to the day, relaxing and resting those aching muscles. You can also use Hakuba as a base to visit the Snow Monkeys in Yudanaka, who also enjoy relaxing in the onsens!
