Hiroshima is still notorious as being the city where the first atom bomb was dropped in 1945, laying waste to the once pretty city and killing over 100,000 people. Today the Peace Park with its A Bomb Dome memorial receives millions of visitors annually to pay their respects, but the city has moved on - it is hard to reconcile the destruction that was caused here on that fateful day at the end of World War II.
Today Hiroshima - known as the "City of Peace" - is hustling and bustling with many Okonomiyaki restaurants specializing in the local pancake. The castle and the Shukkei-en gardens provide an interesting addition to the peace park; the landscaped gardens date back to the 17th Century and are beautiful to wander around. The Museum of Art next door provides a more modern cultural side to this progressive city.
